Last week, ternary cathode material prices declined.

Last week, ternary cathode material prices declined.

Cost side, nickel, cobalt, and lithium prices all fell, leading to a decrease in cathode material costs and market transaction prices.

Supply side, July scheduled production of cathode material manufacturers is expected to see a slight recovery. Leading medium and high-nickel cathode material manufacturers show improved production schedules, while second and third-tier manufacturers' scheduled production remains largely stable or weakens. The market concentration may further increase.

Demand side, NEV sales for June are still expected to rise, with nearly 10% YoY growth in the first three weeks, driven by mid-year sales rush from car manufacturers. From the battery cell end, June scheduled production of battery cells declined, weakening demand for ternary cathode materials. Battery cell producers mainly consumed inventory. However, leading domestic battery cell manufacturers are expected to show improved purchasing demand for cathode materials in July.

Looking ahead, nickel, cobalt, and lithium prices are still in a downward trend, and ternary cathode material prices are expected to run weak.

[SMM Analysis] DRC Cobalt Exports Surge, Shifting Near-Term Bargaining Power to Buyers
The Democratic Republic of the Congo's cobalt exports are gradually recovering, according to the country's mining report for the first half of 2026. The concentrated release of material should ease China's cobalt feedstock shortage and shift bargaining power toward buyers. With cobalt salt demand weak and smelter margins under pressure, additional arrivals will make it harder for sellers to hold firm, and price concessions will be needed to unlock transactions.

[SMM Analysis] August Korea ESS Market Review: Greater Demand Visibility as Grid Policies Take Shape
Korea’s ESS market moved closer to actual procurement expansion in August as policy support for renewable integration and grid stability became more concrete. Attention focused on the next ESS centralized contract market, distribution-grid projects, and stronger non-price criteria such as safety and supply capability. Actual demand growth will depend on final tender volumes, project execution and battery shipments.
